As a former D1 collegiate athlete, I never worried much about what I ate as long as I was getting enough energy to fuel my two-a-day workouts. While my athletic career forced me to learn about what the human body needs to perform at a peak level, I actually developed my passion for healthy eating and everyday fitness after my collegiate career had ended.Â
I had become so accustomed to eating calorie-dense foods with little to no worry about how I'd eventually burn those calories off that when I eventually stopped training at a competitive level I started to notice changes to my body that I had never experienced before. I began working a desk job and remained mostly sedentary for large portions of the day as I pursued early career ambitions. While my job was going well, I started putting on weight in places I'd never had to worry about before, and as I aged into my mid 20s my metabolism naturally started to slow down for the first time in my life due to aging as well. This all culminated in me making the realization that I needed to make a drastic change to my lifestyle.
I began to educate myself on food quality, calorie density, macro-nutrients, and micro-nutrients, things I had never had to worry about before. I started to move more again, realizing that movement and exercise were not only for athletes, but also a necessity for a healthy lifestyle. While I had previously associated workouts with the torture of a grueling collegiate D1 practice, I began to find new ways to make working out fun end enjoyable to the point where I actually looked forward to it each and every day. I also went from primarily eating healthy but bland meals consisting of things like chicken breasts, broccoli, and salad to meals that are both healthy AND delicious after experimenting with a plethora of recipes, ingredients, and flavor profiles.
Cooking and prepping healthy meals is now effortless and enjoyable, as is hitting my daily exercise and activity goals. Diets are hard, and the reason they are so hard is because we don't like to do things we don't like. By making diet and exercise routines in your life enjoyable, you will form a sustainable habit that will give you results that last. Crash diets only work for as long as you are on them, and in every single case people end up putting the weight back on, plus some, once they go back to eating "normally" again. There is no secret diet, the magic comes from making your "normal" as healthy as possible. But don't worry, that doesn't mean you have to cut out your favorite foods entirely. Moderation is essential here, and I'll work with you to devise strategies to learn how to control your eating so that moderation is easy, plus you will be craving healthier meals in no time.
